AC Rhone on a budget...Cool.

January 07, 2010

So, my local purveyor of great value/great price wines, aka Steve, had this new stack of Vacqueyras today.  AOC no less....$11?? WTF?? AOC Vacqueyras for the price of Cotes du Rhone plonk? Hmmmmm. Yr. mst hmble & obdt srvt here was...intrigued.  It's commune wine, that explains the price. Fair enough. 70% Grenache, 20 Syrah, 10 Mourvedre. Light tar, black fruits, and meatiness on the nose.  Medium/light body, good rich mouthfeel. Low acids, meatiness and black fruits on the palate. Bottom line: Heck of a deal for the price range.  Better than any GSM from Oz under $20.  Is is world class "Vacqueyras"? Nah. Too wimpy, not complex enough. But is it worth $11? Hell yeah; every penny of it.  Equal to any CDR in the price point. Enjoy.

Cheers,
